Brussels, Belgium, September 4, 2019 – When it escapes into the atmosphere, HFO-1234yf, the most popular of a new generation of refrigerants called HFOs (hydrofluoroolefins), turns into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), which descends to earth in rain.
Studies have not found this to be harmful to the environment, but many questions remain unanswered about nature’s ultimate tolerance to TFA accumulation, reports the September issue of shecco’s Accelerate Magazine, published online this week.
Debuting in June, Accelerate Magazine is the first news publication written for and about the most progressive business leaders working with climate-friendly natural refrigerants throughout the world. It incorporates shecco’s previously published regional magazines, Accelerate America, Accelerate Europe and Accelerate Australia & New Zealand.
The September issue of Accelerate Magazine (Vol. 1, No. 103) is viewable at no charge at accelerate24.news/magazines. In addition, print copies are distributed at major North American trade shows serving the HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) and refrigeration industries, including ATMOsphere conferences.
The cover story of the new issue looks at some key studies on the potential environmental impact of TFA, particularly a 2017 investigation done for the Norway Environmental Agency that identified numerous “knowledge gaps” that need to be filled before a definitive statement about TFA’s environmental impact can be made.
The September issue also features: Walmart’s transition to low-GWP (global warming potential) refrigerants; the growing market for transcritical CO2 systems in Russia; Chinese companies reporting production of nearly 160,000 propane room air conditioners; and a New Zealand port using the nation’s largest hydrocarbon cooling system. Global trend articles include an update on the Global Cooling Prize and a look at four proposed financing models for efficient cooling.
