Brussels, 11 December 2018 – The winter 2018 edition of Accelerate Europe magazine, published today, celebrates the innovators who have done the most to disrupt the HVAC&R industry and help make the business case for natural refrigerants even more compelling.
At shecco’s ATMOsphere Europe conference in November, five visionary movers and shakers were recognised with Accelerate Europe awards for their unique contributions to advancing natural refrigerants in Europe over the past year. This issue’s cover star, Sergio Girotto, richly deserves his Accelerate Europe Person of the Year crown. During his long career in the HVAC&R industry, he has worked tirelessly to bring CO2 to new areas of application. In the cover story, he sets out what’s next for him and for the industry.
2018 was a year of firsts for CO2 transcritical around the world, and draws to a close with two more. The magazine features the first CO2 transcritical supermarket in the Middle East, in Jordan, and the opening by Delhaize Serbia of its first transcritical store in Serbia.
The issue also covers several key events of the past quarter. With competition between CO2, ammonia and hydrocarbons more fierce than ever, visitors to Chillventa 2018 discovered how natural refrigerants have now become mainstream HVAC&R options as HFCs are phased down.
At ATMOsphere Europe, leading thinkers saw a bright future for CO2 in industrial as well as commercial applications in Europe, while French real estate giant Gecina wants to use natural refrigerants for HVAC. At Sifa in Lyon and at ATMOsphere Ibérica in Madrid, the French, Spanish and Portuguese natural refrigerant markets appeared ripe for growth too.
Policies covered in this issue can also help boost uptake of natural refrigerants. Parties to the Montreal Protocol are discussing support for energy-efficient technologies to complement the HFC phasedown. A bigger charge limit for hydrocarbons is expected to boost the commercial refrigeration market next year, while a new report looks at what more can be done to remove policy barriers to using these flammable natural refrigerants.
This issue’s Technology Focus, meanwhile, looks at the swath of technologies now available to make CO2 possible in warm ambient climate situations in Europe.
