ACCELERATE AMERICA EXAMINES REFRIGERATION SYSTEM THAT DRAMATICALLY CUTS AMMONIA REFRIGERANT AT CALIFORNIA COLD-STORAGE FACILITY

March 14, 2018Featured, NewsEda Isaksson

Portland, Oregon, March 14, 2018:  KPAC General, a California cold-storage operator, has installed an industrial refrigeration system at its new state-of-the-art facility that, unlike traditional systems, dramatically reduces the amount (charge) of ammonia refrigerant. Why KPAC General chose this technology is examined In the March 2018 issue of Accelerate America, published online this week.

Published 10 times annually by shecco, the worldwide expert in natural refrigerant news, Accelerate America is the first news magazine written for and about the most progressive business leaders working with climate-friendly natural refrigerants in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Accelerate America is viewable online at no charge at http://www.acceleratena.com. In addition, print copies are distributed at major North American trade shows serving the HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) and refrigeration industries, and mailed to key end users in food retail, foodservice, cold storage, food processing and other sectors.

KPAC General’s ultra-low-charge ammonia refrigeration system consists of eight packaged rooftop units from NXTCOLD, which deliver cold air at varying temperatures to freezer and refrigerated rooms as well as the dock area. The amount of ammonia used by the units ranges from 30 to 47 gallons, compared to 1,000 to 1,200 gallons in a traditional ammonia system serving the same refrigeration load. This reduced charge improves safety and keeps the facility out of the range of many federal and state regulations.

The March 2018 issue (volume 4, No. 33) also reports on: a study by the Norwegian Environment Agency on the environmental and health effects of HFO refrigerants; an ASHRAE report on proper servicing of flammable refrigerants; a new Senate bill that would enable the EPA to oversee the phase-down of HFC refrigerants; and how CIMCO makes outdoor ice rinks for the NHL.

Also featured: the EPA’s decision to delay raising the charge limit for hydrocarbon refrigerants; the energy-saving impact of night curtains on display cases; a look at the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP); and why home-fridge maker Sub-Zero is exploring the advantages of small-diameter condenser tubes for isobutane.
