Brussels, 7 July, 2017: shecco is part of the 39th Meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG39) of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, taking place on 11-14 July in Bangkok, Thailand as observer. Standards and access to finance to implement a global phase down of HFCs figure as the meeting’s top priorities.
About the Bangkok meeting
The yearly meeting allows the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer to debate about the implementation of the international agreement.
This meeting is of significant importance as it follows the adoption of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol last October 2016, phasing down the production and usage of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) at the global level.
Discussions over standards for HFC alternatives will be one of the main topics of discussion in Bangkok.
Additional funding to the Multilateral Fund & Standards
Funding to implement the Kigali will also be one of the key topics discussed during the meeting.
Parties will debate on the possible allocation of additional funding for the Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol for demonstration and viability projects with HFC free technology.
Such support could help maximising the climate benefit of the accelerated phase-out of HFCs in developing countries.
Funding of production facilities for hydrofluorocarbons will also be discussed during the meeting.
A workshop on the safety standards relevant to the safe use of low-GWP alternatives to HFCs will also be held prior to the Meeting on 10 July 2017 in the same venue.
