New York, 22 September: Together with over 500 organisations and hundreds of sub-national authorities, shecco america has signed a statement calling for ambitious global action on HFCs under the Montreal Protocol.
In two weeks, the countries of the world will gather in Kigali, Rwanda, for a meeting that is expected to go down in the history books as the meeting that put an end to climate-damaging hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). Political pressure is building as the meeting approaches.
On 22 September, shecco america joined more than 500 companies and organisations in signing a statement that calls upon world leaders to take strong action on HFCs. “By avoiding up to 0.5°C of warming by the end of the century, a Montreal Protocol hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phase-down amendment is one of the most significant steps the world can take now to deliver on the goals of the Paris Agreement,” reads the statement.
It underlines the need for developed countries to take the lead in reducing HFC consumption by committing to an early phase-down schedule. The organisations signing the statement also declared their intent, “to work to reduce the use and emissions of high-global-warming-potential HFCs and transition over time to more sustainable alternatives in a manner that maintains or increases energy efficiency”.
“The global HFC phase-down will be a clear opportunity for natural refrigerants to become the mainstream solution in both developed and developing countries. The Kigali deal should encourage the HVAC&R industry globally to develop innovative, future-proof and energy-efficient technologies,” said Marc Chasserot, CEO of shecco america.
The engagement of the private sector builds on the action of leaders from more than 100 countries that gathered in New York on 22 September to underline their support for an ambitious HFC phase-down to be agreed under the Montreal Protocol in October 2016. At the event, hosted by Secretary of State John Kerry, the leaders released the ‘New York Declaration of the Coalition to Secure an Ambitious HFC Amendment’. On this occasion, a group of donors announced they would provide $80 million to support developing countries in the transition away from ozone-depleting and high global-warming refrigerants towards substances that are climate-friendly and energy-efficient.
