shecco has taken the next decisive step to strengthen its involvement in global efforts to move towards greener production and consumption by joining the high-level Green Industry Platform gathering 150 signatories. Invited to a side event during the 5th Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly in Cancun, Mexico, shecco drew attention to the role of public-private partnerships in achieving measurable results in promoting sustainable technologies.
shecco has joined the Green Industry Platform (GIP) – a forum initiated by United Nations agencies UNEP and UNIDO – to emphasise its commitment to using the combined power of organisations representing the private sector, national governments, non-profit bodies, civil society organisations, academia and international organisations in facilitating a faster reduction of unsustainable practices and technologies in manufacturing worldwide.
By becoming a GIP signatory, shecco joins more than 150 members, among them 70 representing the business sector, in a global effort to transform production processes, increase resource efficiency, reduce waste and pollution, and proactively suggest actions to help create new green industries.
“The Green Industry Platform brings together business, government and civil society at the highest levels, in an effort to scale up the application of green industry policies and practices in manufacturing. shecco is confident that the forum will be an effective tool to mainstream the adoption of more sustainable heating, refrigeration and cooling solutions. We have therefore joined this forum to ensure decisions taken in the manufacturing sectors worldwide account for the negative contribution of fluorinated gases and inefficient HVAC&R technologies, while at the same time highlighting the positive impact from a broader adoption of green technologies and substances”, says Marc Chasserot, Managing Director shecco.
shecco speaks at high-level side-event during 5th GEF Assembly
Nina Masson, Deputy Managing Director, announced shecco’s GIP membership during a side-event on 27 May 2014 held in the framework of the 5th GEF Assembly in Cancun, Mexico. Organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the side-event brought together UNIDO high-level representatives involved in Montreal Protocol issues, Climate Change mitigation, Energy Efficiency, Agriculture, Rural Areas and Renewable Energies. Representatives from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) secretariat, the Regional Cleaner Production Center Mexico, the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Cape Verde, as well as the newly founded global Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) shared their views on strategic partnerships and the importance of regional cooperation to achieve climate benefits.
In her opening statement and the subsequent panel debate, Masson highlighted the strategic partnership between shecco and UNIDO that has led to a series of successful joint activities, including the organisation of the UNIDO ATMOsphere Summit in June 2013, followed by the research on and publication of the “GUIDE UNIDO – Natural Solutions for Developing Countries”.
Currently, shecco is one of the co-financing and implementing partners for UNIDO and the governments of Gambia and Vietnam in two projects aimed at increasing the adoption of HFC-free based solutions as a replacement to HCFCs in the fisheries sector.
“More ‘North-South’ cooperation between developed and emerging economies, as well as among neighbouring countries, is needed to facilitate effective knowledge transfer and avoid unnecessary duplication of work. shecco strongly supports private-public partnerships, bringing together two of the most influential groups to implement positive change. One party won’t be fully effective without the other,” Masson said.
“With its acquired expertise and global network, shecco stands ready to support innovative, integrated approaches combining policies, technologies, and management practices with significant climate change mitigation potential. We welcome efforts to highlight co-operation with the private sector in introducing near-zero Global Warming Potential substances at the same time as energy efficient technology, so to both address the direct and the indirect emissions leading to climate change,” she added.
About the Green Industry Platform
The Green Industry Platform (GIP) is a voluntary multi-stakeholder partnership established by UNIDO, UNEP and partner United Nations organisations. It was designed to provide a framework for participants, individually or in groups, to take specific and measurable action to advance Green Industry and move beyond ‘business as usual’ in all countries and business organisations and at all levels: international, regional, national and local.
The GIP partners commit to support the creation of new green industries and help existing industries improve their contributions to social and economic development, to ecological protection, and to the emergence of a more innovative, responsive and resilient manufacturing base. It provides a framework where signatory organisations can jointly raise awareness of the benefits of Green Industry, develop road maps to integrate Green Industry policies and practices in organisational strategies and business plans, and share and profile best practices.

About GEF and the 5th GEF Assembly
The 46th meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council convened in Cancún, Mexico, from 25-30 May 2014. The meeting brought together more than 500 representatives of governments, international organisations and civil society organisations. The GEF Council adopted decisions on long-term strategies for GEF climate financing and the GEF2020 strategy. The 5th Assembly consisted of plenary sessions and high-level roundtables, exhibits and sides events.
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) was created in 1991 in an effort to formulate financing responses to address global climate change. The GEF organisational structure includes an Assembly that meets every four years, a Council that meets twice a year, a Secretariat, and the Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP). The GEF is funded by donor nations, which commit money every four years through a process called the GEF replenishment. In April 2014 (GEF-6), the Trust Fund was replenished by a record US$4.43 billion from 31 donor countries.
