shecco participated at the MOP23 on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer that took place on 21-25 November 2011 in Bali, Indonesia. With an exhibition booth, a side event and summary reports of the event, shecco informed over 400 key policy representatives from 200 countries and various UN agencies about natural alternatives to HFCs and HCFCs.
Exhibition booth
In order to show the ozone officers from around the globe that technologies using ammonia, hydrocarbons and R744 are a viable and efficient solution, shecco informed about its three industry platforms R744.com, ammonia21.com and hydrocarbons21.com. shecco also showcased product brochures of partner organisations to proof that natural refrigerant technology is widely available and working reliably.
Side event: Natural Refrigerants in developing countries
shecco’s well-attended side event “Natural Refrigerants in Article 5 countries: Information sources, best practice and companies involved” was targeted to climate negotiators from developing countries that are looking for technologically viable, safe and efficient alternatives to chemical refrigerants that have to be phased out/down in the near future. Main topics discussed included the following:
Reporting on results of the meeting
shecco policy analysts were following all plenary discussions, side event presentations and group meetings to report on various industry platforms about the outcome of this key policy meeting. The agenda of the meeting covered proposed amendments to the Protocol to include HFCs under its scope submitted by the North American countries (US, Canada and Mexico) and Micronesia, as well the phase-out of HFC23 by-product emissions.
Although for the third time no consensus was reached on proposals to phase-down HFCs under the treaty, as a positive result the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP) will be putting together a report for consideration by the Open-ended Working Group at its 32nd meeting (summer 2012) with information on the availability, cost and potential of low-GWP alternatives, including natural refrigerants. The prospect of a report by TEAP on this topic could prove a key point of reference when countries choose HCFC replacement technologies.
