ATMOsphere Europe 2011 – policy, end-users and innovative technology for natural refrigerants

September 27, 2011NewsAdmin Shecco

On 11-12 October, ATMOsphere Europe 2011 will open its doors to around 180 representatives from the European Institutions, leading European retailers, innovative suppliers or involved NGOs and associations – in short the who’s is who of natural refrigerants, those able to change the future of CO2, ammonia and hydrocarbons.

Taking place at Sofitel Europe in Brussels on Tuesday, 11 Oct – Wednesday, 12 Oct, the focus for this year’s ATMOsphere workshop is Europe, Europe, Europe. Not only will the latest developments with regards to F-Gases, EcoDesign and the Kyoto protocol be discussed but also technology innovations from Europe, market trends for Europe and future plans of leading end-users in Europe. All main

10-point action plan to make a change

The participants will discuss a 10-point-action plan for bringing natural refrigerants faster to Europe. This is expected to serve as a roadmap for interested stakeholders and will be shared with policy and industry decision makers from around the globe after the event. This 10-point action plan/roadmap will look at short, medium and long term actions that can be undertaken to speed up market penetration. Areas on focus will be on:

  1. Technology / training / safety
  2. Policy / standards / regulation
  3. Market / costs / end-users
  4. All put in the context of general awareness and psychology

Policy Sessions on F-Gases and Ecodesign

ATMOsphere Europe comes with perfect timing for the next round of discussions regarding F-Gases. The European Commission just published its assessment report on the F-Gas Regulation and will open a public consultation just before ATMOsphere Europe 2011.

We will have several representatives from the European Commission speaking and attending at our event to discuss next steps as regards F-Gases but also the Ecodesign Directive.

The largest dedicated End User Session

With the largest dedicated end-user panels ever gathered on the matter, the event is focused on discussing and presenting viable technology solutions that can be applied in commercial refrigeration and that enable European retailers to be leaders in the transition away from the use of harmful fluorinated gases. The end users represented and talking about their experiences, barriers and future plans as regards natural refrigerants include:

Carrefour, Marks & Spencer, COOP, Migros, Coca-Cola, Unilever, Robert Wiseman Dairies, Northern Food and others

Innovative Case Studies on both days

Following our call for case studies, a high number of very interesting and innovative case studies have been submitted for the two technical sessions at ATMOsphere Europe. Below the list of the 11 case studies that will be presented:

  • Georges Khoury, SANDEN Manufacturing Europe: Development of a high efficiency CO2 Heat Pump for domestic hot water use in Europe
  • Gunnar Busse, Martin Graz, Obrist Engineering: New safety system for hydrocarbons in Mobile Air Conditioning
  • Michael Griffin, Carrier Transicold: Efficient and sustainable container refrigeration applications using CO2
  • Alexander Cohr Pachai, Johnson Controls: R290 chillers and R600a heat pumps replacing a R22 system in a hospital
  • Klaas Visser, KAV Consulting: The world’s first two stage CO2 transcritical food processing plant
  • Gaku Shimada, Sanyo: High ambient energy efficient CO2 supermarket showcases
  • Raphael Gerber, Frigo-Consulting: Waste heat recovery with combined adsorption and transcritical CO2
  • Asbjørn Leth Vonsild, Danfoss: Energy consumption of second generation CO2 refrigeration system
  • Rob Lamb, Star Refrigeration: NH3 large heat pump at Nestle factory
  • Jan Boone, Mayekawa: Field case studies of industrial plants operating with natural refrigerants
  • Christian Heerup, DTI: Server room heat recovery and free cooling with CO2 and Propane
